But before we talk about talent development we must first discover our talents. What is it that we are good at naturally? We must evaluate ourselves to find our hidden talent and abilities. This can be possible through the help of our friends and families and also by asking our heavenly father to help us learn about our talents. However, there are some keys that could help you pin-point what your talents are by answering these questions;
What do you do that comes naturally that is, something you do without stress?
What do you do that makes people applaud and showers praises on you?
What do you do like to do often that is, even without being paid you still love doing it?
Now if you are able to figure out the answers to the above questions then you might have just found what your talent is or are that is, if it is more than one. And you know what these talents need to be developed even the holy book says and I quote “seest a man skillful in his business for he shall stand before kings and not mere men”. Thus, there is a need to work hard towards developing our talents once discovered.
Having a talent is good but it needs development for you to become a professional. We have a responsibility to develop the talents we have been given. Sometimes we think we do not have many talents or that other people have been blessed with more abilities than we possess. Sometimes we do not use our talents because we are afraid that we might fail or be criticized by others. We should not hide our talents but rather we should use them so others can see our good works and glorify our heavenly father (Matthew 5:16). Our talents are the gifts that God gave us… what we make of our talents is our gift back to God.
How can these talents be developed?
First, we must be willing to spend out time and effort to develop these talents because it demands lots of time and energy and also we must have faith in God to help us. We must also have faith in ourselves that we can excel with that talent.
Secondly, one must be passionate about his/her talent and its development. Passion is what drives you to the extreme of the development and utilization of these talents. Your passion is the vehicle that determines how far you go with your talent. Passion has a way of infusing this bold, dogged and fearless attitude in us especially when we are going through crisis.
Thirdly, one must be willing and ready to learn. We must learn the skills necessary for us to develop our talents. We can do this by taking a class or reading a book that relates with our talent or even by asking a friend who is better in that field to teach us. It is the best way to get better.
Fourthly, you must practice because practice makes perfect. Daily we must practice using our talent. Every talent takes effort and work to develop. The mastery of our talent must be earned.
Finally, we must be ready to serve, we must always look out for opportunities to showcase our talent because in doing so we make mistakes and then we get corrected which is a building process and in a long run make us perfect or professionals. Also by serving, we get seen and known by people who will eventually call for your service someday. We must share our talent with others even if sometimes it’s for free especially while growing.
Friends, you can be successful and life can be more beautiful if only you determine to discover and develop that talent that is embedded within you. Within every individual lies a gift which is from above, coming down from our father of the heavenly lights (James 1:17). You have no reason to complain because that talent in us is God’s plan of making us a huge success in life not withstanding our background or lack of good quality education. Stop waiting till you go to school, the key to your success in life lies in you. Discover them, develop them and utilize them and the wealth or success you seek for may come running after you.
